Abstract:
With the aid of technological development, we march toward an age of interconnectedness, where the vision of building hyper-connected smart cities has become increasingly feasible. However, technological progress alone does not warrant a civilization’s progress. We thus caution against defining smart cities based solely on technological grounds, which conforms to a data-behaviorist ideology that may threaten individual identity and the continuity of cultures and communities. Through a series of conceptual designs and interdisciplinary art projects, we explore means to build affective connections to space, history, and memories through physical experiences, along with new possibilities for subjectivation and collective identification. Thus, we propose built environment may be used to act as a course-correction against a technocentric view of progress. One that, through application of digital technology, helps form a multi-dimensional view of history and balances technology and humanity.

HARBOR MEMORY, led and directed by Moya Sun, was one of the commissioned artworks of 2018 LIGHT CITY at Baltimore. It was the only artwork winning the grands of both neighborhood program, located at Under Armour Global Headquarters, and the city art walk program, located at Inner Harbor. There were both local and international artists in the exhibition, including Cai-guoqiang Studio, Aether & Hemera, Sun Stomp Collective, and 17 other artists or artists group.

Abstract:
In this article, art works as unconventional landscape interventions are introduced, showing the interdisciplinary practices in responding to social and ecological issues brought by the rupture of global activities and local geographies. Started from natural geology and ecology, these public art
works emphasize the close connection between individuals and the global system by coupling social, cultural, and economic phenomena with the physical foundation of the earth. In these practices, site-specific art is functioning as a tool to create intermediate spaces between mind and
function, where actions, manifestos, critics, and questions take forms through site interventions. The openness of these practices stimulates more dialogues among multiple industries about the sustainability of localization.
